This Vietnamese fruit has superior quality and reasonable price, favored by many markets.
Vietnam exports more than 500 million USD of dragon fruit
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the export value of dragon fruit from Vietnam in October 2023 reached nearly 44.7 USD, a slight increase of 0.9% compared to October 2022. In the first 10 months of 2023, the export value of bananas reached 523.5 million USD, down 5.2% over the same period in 2022, accounting for 14.6% of the proportion.
Dragon fruit is grown mainly in Binh Thuan, Long An and Tien Giang and has now developed and spread to 57 provinces and cities nationwide, with a total dragon fruit growing area of 55 thousand hectares, an output of 487,968.2 tons, and an average yield of 22.02 tons/ha.
Vietnamese dragon fruit has been exported to more than 15 countries and territories. In addition to traditional markets such as China, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnamese dragon fruit has also penetrated demanding markets such as the US, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and Australia. Vietnamese dragon fruit once held a monopoly in the international market, accounting for 80-90% of transactions.
In 2017, dragon fruit first became the "king" in the group of exported fruits when it reached 1.157 billion USD and continuously maintained the position of "billion-dollar fruit" until 2021. After that, dragon fruit exports began to decline, falling from 1.042 billion USD (in 2021) to 642 million USD (in 2022). Explaining the sharp decrease in export output, business representatives said that there are now many countries participating in dragon fruit production, making the market increasingly competitive.
Vietnamese dragon fruit is popular in many markets.
Although it is very cheap in Vietnam, this fruit is known as a "super fruit" because of the benefits it brings to human health, such as helping to fight chronic diseases, fight cancer cells, improve the digestive system, control diabetes...
This fruit is especially popular in the billion-people Chinese market. This country is Vietnam's largest dragon fruit export market, accounting for more than 80% of annual output. Chinese products are sold at very high prices, not as sweet and cool as Vietnamese dragon fruit because our country's dragon fruit is grown in tropical areas, with lots of sunshine and suitable soil.
Even though the price of Vietnamese dragon fruit has increased three times, it is still lower than the price of domestic dragon fruit in China. Therefore, Vietnamese dragon fruit is very popular in the Chinese market, especially red-fleshed dragon fruit because Chinese people like the color red.
According to data from Guangxi TWT - a large fruit import company based in Nanning City (Guangxi Province, China) and specializing in importing dragon fruit from Vietnam, Vietnam's dragon fruit export turnover in 2021 was about 1.04 billion USD, of which 925.5 million USD was to the Chinese market.
Meanwhile, in Australia, an emerging market for Vietnamese dragon fruit, this fruit is now available in many large supermarket chains. Dragon fruit is even sold year-round in the land of kangaroos at a price of about 80,000 VND/fruit.
On American consumer websites, Vietnamese red dragon fruit is generally larger than other dragon fruit varieties, with a beautiful and impressive appearance, although not as crispy and sweet as yellow dragon fruit. However, Vietnamese red dragon fruit is always rated as having a superior flavor compared to red dragon fruit varieties in other markets.
Because of the attractiveness of dragon fruit, many countries are continuously increasing their planting areas, especially China. At the end of February, this country announced that it had achieved an output of 1.6 million tons of dragon fruit per year, 200,000 tons higher than Vietnam, rising to the world's leading position in terms of output. Cultivation productivity is close to meeting the country's consumption demand of about 2 million tons per year.
India, which previously accounted for 8-10% of Vietnam's dragon fruit export turnover, is also growing strongly in terms of area and has planted 50,000 hectares. In addition, Mexico has also been able to cultivate dragon fruit, limiting Vietnam's export market share to the US and Canada. This shows that Vietnamese dragon fruit is facing many challenges and needs to regain its export position.
Notably, dragon fruit has become an extremely hot topic on social networking sites in Vietnam in recent days. It is known that the origin of the "fever" of dragon fruit instant noodles comes from the MV (music video) promoting Caty dragon fruit instant noodles. This brand is owned by Caty Food Company Limited. The manufacturer combines instant noodles with dragon fruit because it believes that the coolness of dragon fruit helps limit the heat of instant noodles, a favorite dish of many people.
Previously, the CathyFood booth (the brand that owns dragon fruit noodles) only had a modest revenue of 1.38 million VND on Shopee in 30 days from October 30 to November 28. However, the number of followers of this booth skyrocketed from 173 to nearly 2,000 in just 2 days and is expected to continue to increase.
