HA NOI (VNS)— Authorities in Ha Noi plan to install water filters in 100 households in Quoc Oai suburban district who have been forced to use stagnant pond water for daily use due to a shortage of clean water.
Deputy director of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Dao Duy Tam said around 1,000 households in the district's Ngoc My Commune were facing clean water shortages as a result of the rapid fall in underground water resources.
While 100 households have to use water from stagnant ponds, the remaining use well-water or buy water from other places.
Chairman of Ngoc My Commune's People's Committee Nguyen Van Truong said local residents used to use water from wells for daily use but underground water resources were running out.
"Many households dug wells between 40-60m deep, but still couldn't find any water, forcing them to use water from stagnant ponds," he said.
Two water filters would be installed on a trial basis to help the local residents treat water taken from ponds, he said.
"If the water meets quality standards, the department will install 100 filters for the households, worth VND5 million (US$238) each," he said.
The agriculture and rural development department on Wednesday carried out a survey in Ngoc My commune and plans to install the first two water filters today.
The Quoc Oai District People's Committee has asked authorities to allow the construction of a clean water supply station in the area using water resources from the Da River.
Chairman of the Ha Noi People's Committee Nguyen The Thao has asked authorities in Quoc Oai District to deal with the issue to stop the use of pond water by local residents.
Priority would be given to water supply projects in this area, Thao said.
Clean water shortages are also hitting residents in other suburban districts, including Thanh Oai and Thach That.
